Economics is the study of how people make decisions to allocate scarce resources and the implications for the individual and society. Economists are concerned with a wide variety of issues, not only consumption, production, and the business cycle, but also diverse subjects such as healthcare, education, family, politics, and sports. As such, economics is a dynamic, interdisciplinary field of study.

Established in 1994, the Department of Economics currently has 400 majors and 24 MA students. Economics is the most popular major in the College of Management. The department currently has 12 full-time faculty members specializing in the economics of development, education, health, and sports, as well as in econometrics, industrial organization, and macroeconomics. The faculty’s research is published in top domestic and international academic journals, contributing to Shih Hsin’s strong reputation in the field.

Both the undergraduate and postgraduate programs offer core courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics, and econometrics, as well as advanced electives to provide students with practical job skills and a way of analyzing the major issues facing society. To improve the students’ academic aptitude and workplace competitiveness, the department partners with other colleges and departments to offer courses in Government and Business Administration, Financial News, Digital Convergence, and Enterprise Resource Planning.

Our students find careers in business, such as in banking, financial markets, and insurance, as well as in the media. Graduates also work in national, county, and local government and pursue further studies in economics and related fields.
